Canonical have announced the release of Ubuntu 12.10, the latest version of their popular Linux operating system, with the slogan “Avoid The Pain of Windows 8.”

The release follows 6 long months of development, and introduces many new features to the desktop.

Ubuntu 12.10 – Blurring The Boundaries

Ubuntu 12.10 is, in many ways, the “concept album” of releases. It’s packed to the rafters with new features that blur the distinction between web and desktop.

This is most visible with the introduction of ‘Unity Web Apps’ – an innovative feature that allows over 30 popular websites to ‘integrate’ into the Ubuntu desktop as if they were a normal application.

Once added, apps and services like GMail, YouTube, Amazon and Facebook run in their own browser windows, boast Unity features like quicklists and notification alerts, and hook into Ubuntu’s indicator menus and HUD.

This focus on treating web apps as equal citizens to their desktop counterparts has a profound impact on user experience. Or to put it another way, the ‘gulf’ between the two becomes blurred – and blurred for the better.

But why the change? Canonical’s CEO Jane Silber explains:

“Ubuntu 12.10 is the operating system for the multi-device era. It makes life significantly easier for users by adapting Ubuntu to the way people really access their content today: online and on the hard drive, at work and at home, on the phone and, of course, on the PC.”

Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS is now available to download, Canonical has announced.

It marks the fifth point release to be made to the April 2012 release, supported until 2017, and the first to arrive since the debut of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS earlier this year.

Ubuntu 12.04.5 ships with an updated kernel (3.13) and X.org stack, both drawn from 14.04 LTS. These are provided for new installations on regular x86 hardware, and aim to provide LTS deployments with improved support for both existing and newer hardware.

Those already running earlier versions of Precise can, should they wish, opt in to receive the new ‘Hardware Enablement Stack’. Information on how to do this can be found on the Ubuntu Wiki.

In the release announcement posted to the Ubuntu Mailing List, Canonical’s Stéphane Graber also mentions that this release, like all point releases, rolls together prior bug fixes, patches and packages posted to the OS into newly updated installation media.

“These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS,” he adds.

Also taking part in proceedings are Kubuntu 12.04.5 LTS, Edubuntu 12.04.5 LTS, and Ubuntu Studio 12.04.5 LTS.

Version 11.04 of Ubuntu has hit the streets, and it's packing new features that make it even easier to use. The free download was released to the public on Thursday.

This new version, affectionately known by its makers as "Natty Narwhal," has a new Unity interface on top of its Linux underpinnings. Its most noticeable change is the application launcher on the left side of the screen. Similar to Windows 7's taskbar, it lets you drag and drop icons to and from it, as well as launch apps quickly and easily.

The Unity interface was originally conceived for smaller screens on netbooks, and offers easier file management, a new dashboard that gives you easier access to your applications and files, and Workspaces that simplify managing multiple windows. If you don't like these new interface elements, you can always go back to Ubuntu's Classic interface.

You won't have to give up much for Ubuntu, either — you can even connect an iPhone to it and navigate its file system from Ubuntu (although Android phones don't work as well with it, according to CRN.com). And this new version is reportedly working well with the cloud-based Ubuntu One service, letting users synchronize your preferences and files in the cloud.

What will you miss if you migrate to Ubuntu? In my case, the reason I don't use it all the time is because there is no speech recognition software such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking available for it. On top of that, I still haven't found an easy-to-use text completion program that can fill in large amounts of boilerplate text with a few hotkeys. Someone create these kinds of productivity apps for Ubuntu, and I'm in.

One thing you won't miss are the millions of viruses and worms that attack Windows machines (and now Macs too). You also won't miss paying for an operating system, since the open-source Ubuntu is completely free.

A compelling aspect of Ubuntu is its customizability. One of my favorite graphical customization tools for Ubuntu is Compiz, enabling wild graphical transitions between applications and window movements. Its best effects deal with 3D virtual desktops and windows that bend and wobble when you shake them.

The coolest characteristic of Ubuntu is that if you'd like to try it, you can download its 698MB image, burn that to a CD, and then run it from the CD without having to install it on your machine. It's a great way to try out this Linux-based operating system that's getting to be so refined, it's almost as easy to use as a Mac or PC.

Canonical has announced the availability of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) in server, desktop, and netbook editions.

As well as sporting Linux kernel 2.6.32 Lucid Lynx includes the following new features and improvements:

• Boot speed: Noticeably quicker on almost any machine and super-fast on SSD-based machines such as netbooks, which means users can speed straight to the browser for fast web access.
• Social from the start: The new ‘Me Menu’ in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS consolidates the process of accessing and updating social networks including Facebook, Digg, Twitter and Identi.ca. The Me Menu also integrates chat channels so users can talk with friends or colleagues on Google Talk, MSN, IRC and nearly every network.
• Ubuntu One: Enhanced desktop integration for the online service means files and folders can be shared and saved on the cloud more easily. Bookmark and contacts sharing has been added, speeding the move from personal computer to personal computing.
• Ubuntu One Music Store: Music from the world’s largest labels and greatest bands available direct to Ubuntu users through the default music player. Purchase tracks, store in Ubuntu One and share DRM-free music from one location across multiple computers and devices.
• Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0: An easy way to find new software, and keep track of it once it’s installed in a new, sleeker interface. Users can also single out software provided by Ubuntu, by Canonical partners or by developers who use Canonical’s Launchpad Personal Package Archive (PPA) hosting service.
• Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition (UNE): As well as benefiting from the improvements in the Desktop Edition, netbook users will see even faster boot speeds on SSD-based devices, faster suspend/resume that will extend battery life – and the industry-leading interface for these smaller screens.

Other updates include a switch to open source Nvidia drivers by default, plug-and-play support for iPhone and iPod touch, and a new default theme called “Light” which will surely be a welcome change from the brown tones of previous editions.

As this is the long-term support (LTS) edition Canonical includes three years of support for security and maintenance updates. After that you’ll just get the next LTS release which will again be free to download and use.

Although I don’t have a PC running Linux setup yet I have started experimenting with it through VMWare and VirtualBox. I’ve tried using Fedora, Linux Mint, and will try Peppermint Linux when it finally gets released, but I keep coming back to Ubuntu.

If you are thinking of trying 10.04 through VMWare please note that there is a bug which stops the keyboard from working until you change some settings. You can find a temporary fix at the Reformed Musings blog.

Canonical also had a release day bug that stopped other operating systems loading once 10.04 was installed. That has now been fixed so you can download with confidence.

FL Studio is a powerful music editing app. The app was previously known as Fruity Loops, but has undergone a transformation from a MIDI sequencer to a full audio editing app.

The FL Studio interface is intuitive, but it can be a little difficult for a first-time user to grasp. The browser window on the left side is the file resource window. This covers pre-sets to projects and scores. If you click on an item it will open up a drop down menu of elements. You can fill this library with your own loops and samples, although it already has a large amount of plug-ins, such as DirectWave, EQUO or Fruity Squeeze.

• Loads of plugins.

• Intuitive interface.

• Smart search.

• Multiple editing possibilities.

• Mixer is filled with pre-sets.

FL Studio has a smart search function that helps you quickly find any track, tool or effect. The app comes with stacks of presets that will do the hard work for you. You just have to play around with editing your tracks in the original pattern window. This windows contains all the instruments you have selected; just create the pattern you want for each instrument. With FL Studio you can also use the playlist window which is divided into patterns at the top and audio tracks at the bottom.

FL Studio is a very good sequencer for anyone looking to make music. The browser view and multiple editing windows, such as playlist, piano roll or pattern, allow you to work in different ways. The app can also handle multiple midi-ins and has foot pedal sustain support.

Overall, this is a great music studio app that has tons of features and stacks of tools. The downside is the interface isn't too user friendly and novice users may become overwhelmed.

The first thing you'll notice when starting Microsoft Office 2013 is it's clean, refreshing and coherent look across all supported platforms including desktop, smartphones and tablets.
